Like all sails of the period, the edges of Virginia’s sails are reinforced with a rope called a bolt rope which is handsewn in place by the sailmaker. At each corner of the sail the bolt rope is formed into a loop so that the sail can be lashed to its respective spar.  This corner is from Virginia’s mizzen sail.
