This drawing depicts Virginia moored near Fort St George surrounded by native canoes. Virginia has ocean rigging but with the sprit main commonly used for coastal sailing.
Sam Manning was a marine illustrator, craftsman, builder, teacher, harmonica player, sailor, and oarsman. He worked with John Bradford and David Wyman to illustrate details of the designs for Virginia. He was a frequent contributor to Wooden Boat Magazine. Many of his illustrations are preserved at the Penobscot Marine Museum.
