Introduction to Coastal Navigation

This three-day workshop introduces the fundimentals coastal navigation and teaches participants how to navigate small craft safely in coastal waters. It also provides a broad overview of types of Navigation at Sea. The workshop uses in-person and video instruction and a lot of hands-on work with charts and navigation tools.

The workshop is offered three times during the summer. Each session runs 9am-3pm for three consecutive days. There is a maximum of six students per session. The minimum age is 12. Families are encouraged to attend.

Note: this course does not provide for USCG or other certifications.

The tuition is $40 for MFS members or $60 for non-member. 

The supplies are $70 and are yours to keep after the workshop. If two members of a household work together, only one set of supplies is needed. The supplies are:

  • 7″ compass/dividers
  • mechanical pencil/eraser
  • parallel rules
  • NOAA chart 1210TR – Block Island Sound

 Sessions:  

  •   June 5, 6 and 7             9am – 3 pm
  •   June 19,  20 and 21      9am – 3 pm
  •   July 24, 25 and 26        9am – 3 pm
