Frequently Asked Questions

On the sails and tours there is very little to protect you from the weather. If it is raining you will get wet; if it is sunny you will be in the sun. It can be much colder out on the water than on land. So wear clothing for an outdoor adventure, and wear sunscreen.

We normally sail rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, it is up to the Captain to decide if it is safe to sail, or even to be on the ship at dock. Wear clothing for outdoor activities, and remember it can be colder on the water.

All ticket purchases are nonrefundable unless a tour or sail is canceled by Maine’s First Ship. You can give or sell your ticket to somebody else, or contact us to see if we can reschedule you.

Maine’s First Ship is a membership organization and we have special tour and sailing prices for members at the Deckhand and above level.

We ask you to arrive for a sail 15 minutes before sailing time. For other tours we will start the tour on time and you might be able to join it in progress.

For sailing, we request a minimum age of 12. For other tours children of any age are allowed but children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Unfortunately, ships in the 17th century were not accessible to wheelchairs, and Virginia is not either. Our dock is accessible by wheelchair, but the ramp can be steep at low tide. The deck tour can work for somebody who can climb the four steps onto Virginia.

The ramp to the dock can handle a walker, but there are four steps up to the ship, and you most likely will not be able to get below deck.

We have a marine head aboard Virginia for use during sails, but we recommend everyone use the restroom in the Bath Freight Shed.

You are welcome to take pictures and videos during the sail or tour.

Smoking is not allowed in the Bath Freight Shed or any other public building in Maine. Smoking is not allowed on Virginia or on the dock.
