America’s Boating Course (ABC) – 12 hr version includes a mix of lecture, reading, discussion and  hands-on practice. Appropriate for power and sail boaters and includes:

  1. Boat Education: General information about boats and personal watercraft.
  2. Boat Safety: How to make your boating safer and more comfortable.
  3. Boating Law and Regulation: Laws and regulations that you must follow.
  4. Introduction to navigation including GPS waypoint navigation & Classical dead reckoning principles.

45 minutes each day are hands-on practice with the Maine’s First Ship crew in the freight shed, on the dock, and on Virginia.

At the end of the course is an optional test for ABC certification. This certification meets most state requirements, and Maine has instituted certification requirements for mariners born 1999 or later.

Day 1: Chapters 1-2

Day 2: Chapters 3-4

Day 3: Chapter 5, hands-on navigation, and test for certification.

Instructor: Peter Asquith: US Power Squadron Instructors.

Minimum age: High school students and above

Price:

  • $175 per person for 3 days.  ($125 for Deckhand members).
  • The price includes the book for the course (family members can share)
  • Family discount: Safe boating is a family affair!
    • $300 for 2 (250 member, $125 for second family member)
    • $375 for 3 ($325 member, $75 for third family member)
